Balz Isler, ist 1982 geboren und in Zürich aufgewachsen. Nach Kunststudien an der F&F Zürich folgten anfängliche Performancestudien an der Schule für Schauspiel Hamburg. Anschliessend setzte er sein Kunststudium an der Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg fort mit Schwerpunkt auf Zeitbezogene Medien bei Prof. Jeanne Faust und Prof. Marie-José Burki. Er diplomierte 2011 mit Auszeichnung und erhielt dafür das Jahresstipendium "Stipendium zur Förderung des künstlerischen und wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses"der freien und Hansestadt Hamburg. Ab September 2011 ist er Stipendiat am Kunsthaus Essen unter "Junge Kunst in Essen".

Balz Isler bewegt sich in der Komposition von Klang und Raum, in Installationen und Performances, in denen er sich mit der heutigen Clip- und Dokumentarkultur beschäftigt. Er sammelt aus den ständigen Datenströmungen und versucht mittels unterschiedlicher Medien und Trägern in seiner Arbeit neue Zusammenhänge zu knüpfen, um allenfalls auf neue Bewegung zu schliessen.

Seit 2006 ist er Mitglied des Tapemosphere-Kollektives mit dessen zahlreichen Produktionen, Ausstellungen und Aktionen im Inn- und Ausland. In 2009 eröffnete er die Präsentationswerkstatt Die Kunstapotheke und 2010 das Studiokolletiv an der Ziegrastrasse in Berlin.

AN EFFORT TO EXPLAIN MYSELF
My name is Balz Isler. I grew up in Switzerland, more precisely in the capitol city Zurich, where we all make money, chocolate and cheese. Something happened though, that I found interest in art.
The silent rules of the graffiti movement, where I have my roots, became more and more bore aspects for me.
I learned about constellations of form and color by studying the movement but the hierarchical structures and stereotypes pushed me into another direction of interests.
The pictorial of Pop art and the experimental performance scene became my new inspiration and changed my perspectives. I started working with video and photography from the aspects of painting and progression in a general sense. Later works takes me back to the street, where I create performances in and about public places, and other interventions. Instead painting walls I start to build sculptures from street/ or in the street found-items creating rearrangements and other “Verwirrlichkeiten” trying to change the perspectives of accepted customs. I still remember the feeling of my first contribution to an exhibition. I r
emember thinking, “this feeling, I would like to feel again”. Today, November 2009, writing this letter explaining my aspect of work, I feel on track.
But back to the order of events!
My interest in acting takes me to Hamburg, where I study, change studies and still study Fine Art. Together with Bela Janssen artist/illustrator and Block Barley, musician, I establish the collective “Tapemoshpere”. In the frame of Tapemosphere the work evolves around creating different atmosphere complimented with the material of audiotape in a fusion of installation, music compositions and spatial expressions. This community is still active.
Today I continue to deal with principles of compositions for sound and space. I like to thematize my interests and transactions in a form of Performance Theater and lecture in which I cultivate the idea of conspiracy. In the process of composing, I collect a lot of drawings, objects and hints, which I integrate in my performance-lectures. These objects and the documentation of these is a theme in itself, which is a concern of mine.
